∎ Background
∎ The USAID Ain Shohayota Activity (the "Activity") is a five-year project implemented by Democracy International in Bangladesh. Its goal is to promote people-centered justice across 32 districts through increased public participation, inclusivity, and data-driven approaches to strengthen the justice system. It is committed to ensuring that all people are able to resolve their disputes in a fair and timely manner regardless of their ability to pay. The Activity has three main objectives: i) increase demand for responsive justice services, ii) promote pro-bono legal services, and iii) build and utilize an evidence-base to strengthen justice services. As part of its efforts to strengthen dispute resolution mechanisms, it is planning to work with the Government of Bangladesh to improve case management in the district courts.
∎ Position Summary
∎ Democracy International seeks to hire a Case Management Expert (the "Expert") to improve case management in the district courts. With the permission of the Government, the Activity plans to work with judges in 5-10 districts over the scope of the year to prepare specific plans to address the case backlog and monitor progress through the implementation process. The Expert will support the Activity in developing the case management plans with the selected judges, incorporating international best practice and lessons learned within the Bangladesh context. The Expert will also be responsible for providing mentorship through the implementation of the agreed plans and keeping the Activity and the Government of Bangladesh up-to-date on progress and any challenges encountered.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Attend events, meetings, and workshops as requested;
∎ Review and contribute to the development of training material to ensure they are accurate and compatible with the Bangladesh context;
∎ Provide mentoring through the course of the events, meetings, and workshops;
∎ Keep minutes of events, meetings, and workshops, which must be sent to the Activity within three days of the event;
∎ Memorialize the plans and ideas developed through group work and prepare formal versions of the plans;
∎ Update the plans as necessary through the course of the year;
∎ Check-in with the participants on a one-on-one basis through phone on at least a monthly basis to check on progress and identify any challenges. Update the Activity on the content of the calls;
∎ Keep a detailed list of successes and lessons learned through the course of the implementation of the plans; and
∎ Be available to answer questions by the participants and ensure the Activity is aware of any challenges being faced in the field.
∎ Other related tasks may also be assigned through the course of implementing the plans if necessary.
∎ This position reports to the Chief of Party.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Age at least 30 years
∎ Working proficiency in Bangla and English
∎ At least 10 years of experience in the legal profession
∎ At least 5 years of experience working on case management in Bangladesh, familiarity with international best practice preferred
∎ Extensive knowledge of the pressures faced in the district courts of Bangladesh
∎ Experience serving as a mentor and/or trainer
∎ Liaison with judicial officials is an advantage
Compensation & Other Benefits:

∎ The Expert will work no more than 30 days on this assignment for a 12-month period following the signing of the contract. The Expert will only be compensated for days agreed in writing by the Activity, and will be paid on a bi-monthly basis against a timesheet. If travel is required, the Activity will bear the travel expenses in accordance with its official policy.
