Responsibilities & Context:

A Hospital Accountant manages the financial functions of a healthcare facility, ensuring accurate recording, reporting, and analysis of all financial transactions within the hospital. Their role supports budgeting, compliance, cost control, and financial decision-making.

Core Responsibilities

  • Financial Record Keeping & Reporting

  • Record day-to-day financial transactions (payments, receipts, journal entries).

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and statements.

  • • Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and charts of accounts.

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Process bills, invoices, supplier payments, and hospital receivables.

  • Follow up on overdue payments and ensure reconciliations.

  • Bank and Cash Management

  • Reconcile bank accounts, manage cash flows, and handle petty cash controls.

  • Ensure accurate recording of daily cash collections like patient payments.

  • Asset Accounting & Cost Tracking

  • Record hospital fixed assets, calculate depreciation, and maintain asset registers.

  • Track costs by department or service (e.g., inpatient, outpatient).

  • Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist with preparing budgets and financial forecasts.

  • Compare actual results with budgets and explain variances.

  • Audits & Compliance

  • Assist internal and external auditors.

  • Ensure financial practices conform to accounting standards and regulations.

  • Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Coordinate with other hospital departments (billing, IT, operations).
