About the Progrmme:
BRAC started its journey with the humanitarian assistance to the war-ravaged population following Bangladesh`s war of independence in 1971, thus its humanitarian identity is at the core of its ethos and foundations. Since then, BRAC has stood by the most vulnerable population with emergency response, recovery, and rehabilitation support after all major disasters in Bangladesh. Emerging from the need to address disaster management efforts more efficiently, effectively, and timely, BRAC created a dedicated programme titled "Disaster Environment and Climate Change" in 2008, which was restructured and retitled as Disaster Risk Management Program (DRMP) with an aim to strengthen community resilience through disaster risk reduction and preparedness along with emergency response and recovery actions. DRMP works to strengthen resilience across the most vulnerable communities and provides holistic humanitarian support to the people affected by disasters and crises in Bangladesh.
Project Brief:
The World Bank-funded and LGED-implemented Resilient Infrastructure for Adaptation and Vulnerability Reduction (RIVER) project aims to reduce community vulnerability to riverine and flash floods, strengthen disaster preparedness and response capacity, and enable rapid responses to emergencies. It covers flood-prone districts across the Teesta--Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Padma, and Surma-Meghna basins.
The project has four components: (i) resilient flood shelters and community infrastructure; (ii) disaster preparedness, response capacity, and technical assistance; (iii) project management, design, supervision, monitoring, and evaluation; and (iv) contingency emergency response.
The Community Engagement, Mobilisation and Resilience Capacity Building (CEMRCB) component focuses on com-munity engagement, consultation, mobilisation, and capacity development, with particular emphasis on long-term flood resilience. It aims to strengthen communities` understanding of flood risks, preparedness measures, and self-protection practices to support faster responses and build lasting resilience.
