Matlab Hospital, established by icddr,b in 1963, was initially set up to treat diarrhoeal patients from Matlab and nearby areas. Over the years, it has evolved into a regional diarrhoea treatment centre, now serving more than 50,000 patients annually. In addition to diarrhoeal care, the hospital provides maternal and child health (MCH) services for women of reproductive age and children under five living within the icddr,b service area. Dedicated to serving rural communities, Matlab Hospital plays a critical role in addressing diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition, and pneumonia, thereby improving health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations. It also serves as an important platform for a wide range of clinical research and continues to run diarrhoeal disease surveillance to monitor antimicrobial resistance in rural settings.

Key Responsibilities:

The physician will report to the Head of Matlab Hospital and will be responsible for providing standard clinical care as well as conducting clinical research.

She/He will be responsible for:

• Manage patients with diarrhoea and associated illnesses, including history taking, physical examinations, essential lab investigations, appropriate treatment, and follow-up of admitted cases.

• Deliver antenatal care (ANC), conduct deliveries, provide newborn care, and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) unit.

• Ensure adherence to standard clinical guidelines, protocols.

• Manage emergency situations and complicated cases in rural settings.

• Counsel patients and their families on treatment adherence and disease prevention.

• Document and maintain patient records using the hospital’s electronic database, “SHEBA”.

• Build knowledge and skills in epidemiology and biostatistics.

• Develop research proposal, conduct data analysis, perform literature reviews, and writing manuscripts.

• Participate in morning sessions, Community of Practice (CoP), and the Executive Director’s seminar

• Work in collaboration with Dhaka Hospital for the management of complicated cases, timely referrals, and joint research initiatives.

Contract Type and duration: CSA basis for 11 months with a possibility of extension subject to availability of fund and performance.

91,540/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances; Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen food.
