Education

Some courses that can help prepare you for a career as a hydrotest technician include:

• Hydrostatic Testing Online Course: This course from CWB Group covers topics such as testing theory, test set up, and test instrumentation. Upon completion, you`ll receive a course completion certificate, 15 PDH, and 1.5 CEU credits. 

• ASME B31.3 training course: This course from PetroSync teaches you the principles, procedures, and techniques of hydrostatic testing and piping design. 

  Other skills

• Hydrotest technicians should also have good communication skills, the ability to pay attention to detail, and the ability to operate and inspect temperature and pressure gauges and charts. Some roles may also prefer candidates with experience working with oil field equipment, or the ability to drive a forklift or operate a crane.

A hydrotest technician's responsibilities include:

• Testing: Testing objects like tanks, boilers, pipes, and fittings for leaks 
• Installing fittings: Sealing outlets by installing fittings on the object 
• Connecting to a pressure line: Connecting the object to a high pressure air or water line 
• Activating a pump or compressor: Activating a water pump or air compressor until the gauge reaches the specified internal pressure 
• Observing for pressure loss: Observing the gauge for pressure loss, which indicates a leak 
• Examining for escaping air or water: Examining the object for escaping air or water to detect leaks 
• Marking the source of leaks: Marking the source of leaks for subsequent repair 
• Applying a soap solution: Applying a soap solution to the surface of the object to help locate air leaks 
• A hydrotest is a nondestructive endurance test that helps identify weak links in the pressure parts of steam generators.
