A. Clinical Management
The Consultant provides comprehensive, evidence-based care for critically ill patients:
Patient Assessment & Diagnosis
Perform rapid, accurate assessments of critically ill patients
Diagnose and manage patients with multi-organ dysfunction or failure
Interpret laboratory results, blood gas analyses, and imaging studies
Treatment & Monitoring
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
Manage mechanical ventilation and weaning protocols
Monitor hemodynamic status, cardiac function, respiratory function, and organ perfusion
Prescribe and manage vasoactive medications, inotropes, sedatives, and analgesics
Care Coordination
Conduct daily clinical rounds and adjust treatment strategies as necessary
Coordinate safe transfer of patients from operating room to ICU and to step-down units
Liaise with external doctors and other specialties (cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, neurosurgery, etc.)
B. Advanced Procedures
The Consultant performs and supervises a range of critical care procedures. These may include:
Airway & Respiratory Management: Endotracheal intubation, fiber optic bronchoscopy, bedside percutaneous tracheostomy, prone position ventilation
Vascular Access: Central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, Peripheral Inserted Central Venous Catheter (PICC), insertion of Dialysis catheter (Femoral/Jugular).
Drainage & Support: Chest tube management, Pig-Tail Catheter insertion (pleural/peritoneal).
Diagnostic Procedures: Bedside rapid USG-guided routine ICU procedures, Biopsy sample collection, Lumber puncture for CSF study.
Advanced Interventions: Insertion of perma-cath (Permanent Hemodialysis Catheter), Chemo-port insertion, therapeutic hypothermia leadership.
Key leadership duties include :
Leading the ICU team and implementing evidence-based protocols
Supervising and guiding junior doctors and nursing staff
Providing consultation and advisory services to clinical colleagues in other specialties
Participating in the development of treatment protocols and guidelines.
C. Quality Assurance & Safety
Ensure compliance with clinical protocols and standards of care
Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and infection control activities
Adhere to hospital policies and ensure patient safety in equipment utilization
Lead emergency response and cardiac arrest management within the ICU.
D. Teaching & Training
Facilitate teaching and training programs for ICU nurses, technicians, and resident doctors
Mentor and guide medical officers and junior staff in critical care practices.
E. Administrative & Committee Duties
Participate in hospital medical boards and case discussions
Maintain accurate medical records and ensure proper documentation
Participate in on-call and emergency duty schedules.
