Responsibilities & Context:

The day-to-day tasks of an accountant generally fall into three buckets: Compliance, Analysis, and Operations.

• Financial Reporting: Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheets, P&L, and Cash Flow).

• General Ledger Management: Reconciling bank statements and ledger accounts to ensure every cent is accounted for.

• Tax Compliance: Managing tax filings (VAT, GST, or Sales Tax) and ensuring the company stays on the right side of local and federal laws.

• Accounts Payable/Receivable: Overseeing the money coming in (billing) and going out (vendors/payroll).

• Audit Support: Serving as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors to verify financial integrity.

• Budgeting & Forecasting: Partnering with department heads to track actual spend against projected budgets.

• Context defines how the work is done. An accountant’s focus shifts significantly depending on the environment:

  In a fast-paced startup, an accountant is often a "department of one."

  • Focus: Burn rate, cash runway, and setting up scalable systems from scratch.
