Job Context:
∎ Background: The Feed the Future Bangladesh Improving Trade and Business Enabling Environment Activity (Feed the Future Bangladesh Trade Activity) aims to improve economic growth in Bangladesh through the following objectives:
∎ Objective 1: Improving Trade Facilitation;
∎ Objective 2: Improving Business Enabling Environment; and
∎ Objective 3: Promoting Best Practices in Economic Growth Activities and Their Application.
∎ This includes facilitating an improved policy environment to promote sustainable economic growth and prosperity, improved regional economic cooperation, sound management of institutions, and good governance while expanding markets for U.S. goods and services in the Indo-Pacific. This activity also addresses efficiency and transparency in the business enabling environment.
∎ The Feed the Future Bangladesh Trade Activity delivers technical assistance and capacity building to support the implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and improve the BEE. The project works with key public agencies, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations. Work activities draw on best practices and regional experiences in order to build support for initiatives aimed at simplifying documentary requirements for imports and exports. The project supports strengthening technical capacity across border agencies and modernizing procedures through digitization and ICT.
∎ The technical assistance and capacity-building activities supported by Feed the Future Bangladesh Trade Activity are based on an inclusive approach that integrates the gender dimension and addresses vulnerable and marginalized populations. Ensuring inclusivity is central to realizing USAID goals and objectives for the Feed the Future Bangladesh Trade Activity. Activities seek to include and ensure representation of women, youth, and other marginalized groups in public-private dialogue and advocacy efforts.
∎ Description and Rationale
∎ Feed the Future Bangladesh Trade Activity plans to publish the Easy Export Series to increase exports of Bangladesh food products and support exporters on food safety requirements in different countries. The Easy Export Series will be a multi-media awareness campaign meant for producers of fresh fruits and vegetables (FFV) and food processors.
∎ This Scope of Work (SOW) calls for a translator to translate various food safety-related documents from English into Bengali and Bengali into English. The candidate will consult with authors and other experts within or outside the Trade Activity to clarify the meaning. The candidate will also revise or review translations produced by external contractors.
∎ Reporting Requirements: The Translator will report to the Senior Communications Specialist through regular briefings and day-to-day dialogue.
∎ Contracting Type and Period of Performance: The period of performance will be approximately six months, and payment will be made on a per-word or per-page rate through a service agreement with the successful offeror. All interested offerors should submit a per-word or per-page quotation with their application.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ The Translators shall:
∎ Translate various technical documents from English into Bengali and Bengali into English on topics including but not limited to:
∎ Food safety and easy food export in Bangladesh.
∎ Legal documents on agriculture and food science.
∎ Guidance document(s) on export procedures for FFVs from Bangladesh.
∎ Guidance document(s) on exporting FFVs to the EU and the Middle East.
∎ Guidance document(s) on food safety requirements for food processors (Middle East, EU, and USFDA).
∎ Guidance document(s) on food chain traceability
∎ Proofread translations and ensure that they are free from errors.
∎ Ensure user-friendliness of highly technical content for a non-technical audience.
∎ Communicate directly with relevant technical team members as needed to clarify questions on the technical content of a document to ensure the accuracy of the translated material.
∎ Ensure that translated texts meet all relevant editorial requirements (i.e., layout, style, font, maintaining the concepts, tone, cultural references, and nuances of the source text, etc.).
∎ Deliver the translation within the deadline.
∎ Deliverables and Timeframe: Upon receiving the document(s), the Translator shall work with members of the technical team to determine a mutually agreed and reasonable deadline and will translate the document(s) within this timeframe, ensuring that technical terms are properly translated (translations are not always literal). The translation should require little or no revision and must be reviewed and approved by IDG.
Additional Requirements:
∎ Contextual knowledge of agriculture and food science-related terms as well as legal terms both in Bengali and English.
∎ Previous experience with relevant translation will be given preference.
∎ Manage workflows to meet assignment submission deadlines.
∎ Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and strong knowledge of other Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint) and other word processing software (i.e., Adobe) is required.
∎ Excellent writing skills both in Bengali and English. The translations must be free of any grammatical or spelling errors.
