Job Context:
∎ Job Location: Dhaka, with frequent travel to the field (50% Dhaka; 50% field)
∎ Reporting Line: WASH Technical Lead

Job Responsibilities:
∎ The key responsibilities of the Technical Specialist - Sanitation Market Systems will include the following
∎ Sector Analysis and Intervention Design:
∎ Based on field data collected by the project to date and additional field scoping where needed, identify key constraints to households' adopting improved sanitation practices in the project's three geographic working areas (Faridpur, Patuakhali, Khulna)
∎ Adopting both a market development and social and behavior change lens, analyze and identify strategies to stimulate adoption of improved sanitation practices both at the household level and in public places such as rural markets
∎ Identify private sector actors whose interests align with the project's goals and engage in building private sector partnerships
∎ Lead the design of market-based interventions to increase adoption of improved sanitation practices at the household level and in rural market space, in collaboration with private sector actors
∎ Intervention Implementation & Results Monitoring
∎ Lead the implementation of market-based interventions to increase adoption of improved sanitation practices at the household level and in public places such as rural markets, in partnership with private sector actors
∎ Manage and oversee the budget pertaining to these interventions
∎ Contribute substantially to developing the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Plans for the hygiene interventions
∎ Critically evaluate intervention success and take corrective measures in consultation with the Technical Lead WASH
∎ Partner Engagement:
∎ Engage with private sector actors to explore partnerships for sanitation interventions, negotiate conditions of collaboration and establish partnerships in compliance with project and donor requirements
∎ Build and nurture strategic partnerships with key public stakeholders in the sanitation sector
∎ Reporting and Documentation:
∎ Document findings from field scoping
∎ Develop intervention concept notes
∎ Regularly document progress and learnings from improved sanitation interventions and contribute relevant sections to quarterly and annual project progress reports
∎ Develop and document case studies and success stories as and when required
∎ Consortium Engagement
∎ Engage with local implementing partners to ensure all partners well understand sanitation interventions
∎ Collaboratively plan the implementation of intervention activities involving local implementing partners through the preparation of annual work plans and detailed implementation plans
∎ Other:
∎ The Technical Specialist - Sanitation Market Systems will form part of the core strategic team of BNA's WASH component, comprising the Technical Lead WASH and two Technical Specialists focusing on hygiene and safe water market, respectively. The Technical Specialist - Sanitation Market Systems will be expected to constructively engage in discussions on the design and implementation of hygiene and water interventions and proactively seek the team's inputs on sanitation intervention design.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Work Experience:
∎ A minimum of 3-5 years of work experience with 2-3 years' experience in sanitation market systems development
∎ Prior experience in the sanitation sector, and/or willingness to familiarize him or herself with aspects around both public place and household level based improved sanitation products, services
∎ Experience in working with private sector partners
∎ Proven experience with monitoring and results measurement
∎ Proficiency in designing and conducting research using qualitative and quantitative tools, and in documenting and critically analyzing results efficiently and comprehensively
∎ Experience with social behavior change approaches to intervention design
∎ Skills & willingness to travel:
∎ Strong analytical skills, an investigative mind set and a passion for understanding incentives motivating multiple, interrelated actors in complex sectors
∎ Ability to communicate openly and to work constructively in a team
∎ Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Bangla
∎ Excellent computer literacy in Windows Office programs (especially Word and Excel); Familiarity with internet-based software systems such as Google Apps are of advantage
∎ Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact constructively with a variety of stakeholders in the field including rural households, local informal entrepreneurs, and local Government representatives
∎ Ability to work in a consortium environment, maintaining constructive relationships with colleagues from all partner organizations
∎ Willingness to spend up to 50% of time in field locations in Faridpur, Khulna and Patuakhali Districts, and to travel on short notice on occasion.
