Experience:
Valid registration of BMDC.
Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Proficiency in arterial/central line insertion, intubation, and ventilator management.
Postgraduate training or diplomas (e.g., MCPS, FCPS Part 1, MD Pediatrics Phase A/B, DCH, or MRCPCH) with a focus on critical care.
Clinical Judgment: Ability to make rapid, life-saving decisions in high-pressure pediatric emergencies.
Procedural Dexterity: Manual skill and confidence to perform invasive procedures on critically ill infants and children.
Communication: Excellent skills for breaking bad news and liaising between the consultant team, nursing staff, and distressed families.
Teamwork: Ability to lead a shift team while taking direction from the Consultant Intensivist.
Resilience: Emotional stability to cope with prolonged shifts and pediatric mortality/morbidity.
Clinical Care & Procedures
Critical Patient Management: Independently assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill pediatric patients requiring intensive care, including those with respiratory failure, septic shock, multi-organ dysfunction, and post-operative complications.
Advanced Life Support: Lead pediatric resuscitation efforts (CPR) according to PALS protocols during emergencies within the PICU and throughout the hospital.
Specialized Procedures: Perform high-risk procedures independently or under consultant supervision, including:
Endotracheal Intubation & Advanced Airway Management.
Central Venous Access (CVP lines) and Arterial Line Insertion.
Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) application (CPAP/BiPAP).
Ventilator Management: Initiate, monitor, and adjust conventional mechanical ventilation settings based on blood gas analysis and patient pathophysiology.
Monitoring & Diagnostics: Order and interpret complex diagnostic tests (ABGs, imaging, labs). Expedite critical results and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
Team Leadership & Supervision
Shift Lead: Act as the clinical lead during assigned shifts, and Nursing Staff in the PICU.
Handover Protocols: Ensure rigorous bedside handover of critical patients at shift changes, maintaining continuity of care.
Mentorship: Provide on-the-job training and supervision for junior doctors regarding critical care procedures, ventilator strategies, and emergency management.
Administrative & Quality Assurance
Documentation: Maintain accurate medical records in the Hospital Information System (HIS/RIS), including daily progress notes, procedure notes, and discharge summaries.
Protocol Compliance: Adhere strictly to PICU Standardized Medical Protocols (SMPs), Minimum Service Delivery Standards (MSDS), and Infection Control (IC) policies.
Patient & Family Communication: Counsel families regarding critical diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognosis with empathy and professionalism. Obtain informed consent for procedures.
Emergency Preparedness: Ensure the availability of life-saving drugs and the readiness of emergency equipment (crash cart, defibrillator, ventilator) at all times.
