Responsibilities & Context:
∎ Reviewing the translations of all laboratory protocols and materials for accuracy, and rephrasing and translating new materials when needed.
∎ Attending a 14-day training on all laboratory protocols for analyzing and storing stool, blood, and water samples.
∎ Conducting laboratory analyses of bio-specimen and environmental samples according to protocol.
∎ Ensuring fecal samples are enriched in APW within 1 hour of sample collection.
∎ Working closely with the Project Coordinator and evaluation research officers to coordinate delivery of all fecal and environmental samples to the laboratory for analysis within 4 hours of sample collection for household visits and within 1 hour of sample collection for health facility visits. Those samples outside of this window should be discarded. This event should be recorded and report to the Project Coordinator and Dr. Christine Marie George.
∎ Conducting rapid dipstick testing requested on fecal samples.
∎ Preserving fecal and blood samples on Whatman papers and nutrient agar when indicated.
∎ Conducting bacteriological culturing on water and fecal samples
∎ Conducting initial processing of blood samples, DNA extraction and PCR of water and fecal samples.
∎ Ensuring laboratory space is sterile and there is not any contamination at ALL times.
∎ Working closely with Dr. David Sack and Dr. Christine Marie George to refine laboratory protocols Checking all laboratory forms for completeness daily and following up with laboratory research officers on forms with incomplete or erroneous data.
∎ Working closely with the Kelly Endres to set up the laboratory including helping to clean the laboratory space.
∎ Maintaining a detailed inventory on laboratory supplies and send an inventory report on a weekly basis to the Project Coordinator and Study Principal Investigator.
∎ Purchase laboratory supplies as needed when directed by the Project Coordinator or Principal Investigator.
∎ Must be willing to travel and work with Customs/Immigration for purchasing certain supplies.
∎ Developing laboratory safety protocols and waste removal protocols with the Dr. David Sack and Dr. Christine Marie George to ensure safety and waste removal is up to code with the laboratory building regulations.
∎ Tracking all bio specimen and environmental samples collected during the study period using a bar coding system
∎ Entering all water, blood, and fecal samples collected into the laboratory receiving/tracking database.
∎ Conducting monthly refresher trainings of laboratory methodologies with laboratory research officers.
∎ Supervising all laboratory activities of the laboratory research officers.
∎ Developing monthly calendars for laboratory research officers using morning and evening shifts.
∎ Monitoring and maintaining liquid nitrogen levels and report to the Project Coordinator when more is needed.
∎ Putting in service request for repairing for any malfunctioning laboratory equipment or for routine equipment maintenance.
∎ Ensuring there is always an adequate supply of DI water available for laboratory activities, maintaining an autoclave log.
∎ Submitting weekly reports to Principal Investigator Christine Marie George and Dr. David Sack and Project Coordinator.
∎ Assist in creating posters, manuscripts, and reports on laboratory aspects of the study.
∎ Assist in any other aspects of studies as directed by Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator.
∎ Assist in any future shipment of samples leaving Bangladesh. This may include but not limited to:
∎ Organizing the samples clearly so the receiving team can find each sample easily
∎ Conducting any analyses that may be required before shipment processing
∎ Translating and transcribing of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions when needed. Everyone on the team needs to contribute to this task.
∎ This position will sometimes include work early in the morning and late in the evenings and on Fridays and Saturdays, based on urgent project needs and deadlines that arise.
∎ Overnight travel to remote field sites.
∎ RTM International is going to appoint a number of skilled professionals for the study titled “Testing a Scalable Model of the Cholera Hospital-Based Intervention (Rural Model)”. The required qualification and experiences for the position is given below:
