Job Context:
∎ Cambridge Fellowship in Environmental Science and Engineering
∎ Applications are invited for a 12-month fellowship in environmental science and engineering for CAPABLE (Cambridge Programme to Assist Bangladesh in Lifestyle and Environmental risk reduction).
∎ CAPABLE is a multi-disciplinary programme looking at the interaction between the environment and long-term health. CAPABLE aims to develop innovative solutions to air and water pollution. This initiative is led by the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge, with several partner organisations in the UK and Bangladesh. The fellowship programme will be locally managed by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), a government scientific organisation for disease prevention and research. ∎ The position will commence from September 2019. The 12-month fellowship will be split between Bangladesh and the UK.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ This fellow will work with the Centre for Sustainable Development based in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, which conducts research into water, sanitation and sustainability issues in both developed and developing countries, largely through a systems approach, and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, a world leading global health research institute.
∎ The project is on understanding the influence of alternative water system interventions on arsenic exposure from households that have access to piped water supply, to those using point of use water treatment systems, to those accessing unimproved sources.
∎ The fellow will conduct data analysis using a systems level approach, for example using Bayesian networks, to compare factors that influence the probability of water system functionality of different intervention options and the socioeconomic factors that determine choice of water supply and respective health outcomes. The fellow will receive training in system dynamics approaches to data analysis and may be required to be involved in some primary data collection in Bangladesh.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Experience with field implementations of water supply interventions
∎ Good command of oral and written English language
∎ Contacts with local water providers
∎ Links with governance agencies
∎ Interest in system dynamics techniques and analysis
∎ Experience in publishing research
∎ Experience working in Bangladesh
∎ Experience with household level interventions for water supply in Bangladesh
∎ Experience in applying system dynamics and associated methods
∎ Experience in oral communication and conducting field surveys
∎ Competent in using software packages e.g. Vensim, Netica, Netlogo
∎ Experience in working abroad
∎ Ability to interact with academic partners from other disciplines such as epidemiology
∎ Ability to work as part of a team
∎ Good communication skills
∎ Ability to think independently
∎ Willingness to travel for research purposes
∎ Evidence of leadership skills

Salary:
∎ The fellow will be paid 60,000 BDT/month whilst in Bangladesh and £1,323/month whilst in the UK, and other benefits (including return airfare to the UK and research consumables, as applicable).
