Responsibilities:

Operation Theatre Services and Clinical Support

  • Oversee the overall functioning of the Operation Theatre for obstetric and gynecological surgeries, including emergency caesarean sections

  • Ensure OT readiness at all times, including instruments, equipment, drugs, linen, and emergency supplies

  • Ensure compliance with national and organizational surgical and CEmONC protocols

  • Ensure proper patient preparation, surgical safety checklist implementation, and post-operative handover

  • Monitor adherence to aseptic techniques and sterilization standards during all procedures

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

  • Ensure strict IPC practices within the OT complex, including scrub areas, sterile stores, and recovery areas

  • Coordinate with the sterilization unit for proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of instruments

  • Monitor waste segregation, sharps disposal, and biomedical waste management as per guidelines

Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervise OT nurses, OT technicians, and support staff working under OT services

  • Prepare and manage OT duty rosters ensuring adequate coverage for elective and emergency cases

  • Provide on-the-job coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to OT staff

  • Support orientation and skill development of newly recruited OT staff

Coordination and Teamwork

  • Coordinate closely with surgeons, anesthetists, nursing team, pharmacy, laboratory, blood bank, and ward teams

  • Act as the focal person for all OT-related coordination with hospital management

  • Ensure effective communication during emergencies and high-risk surgical cases

Documentation and Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation of OT registers, surgical logs, instrument counts, and safety checklists

  • Ensure timely completion of pre-operative and post-operative records

  • Compile and submit daily, weekly, and monthly OT service reports

Stock and Equipment Management

  • Oversee inventory management of OT instruments, consumables, drugs, and linen

  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and rational use of OT supplies

  • Monitor equipment functionality and report breakdowns, shortages, or expiries promptly

Quality Improvement and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with SOPs, clinical guidelines, and donor or organizational requirements

  • Support internal and external audits, supervision visits, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Participate in morbidity, mortality, and clinical review meetings related to surgical care

Training and Capacity Building

  • Identify training needs of OT staff and support capacity-building initiatives

  • Participate in drills, simulations, and refresher trainings related to emergency obstetric surgery and OT safety

Other Responsibilities

  • Support emergency response during mass casualty or surge situations

  • Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the supervisor or senior management

Skill and Competencies:

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma or BSc in Nursing with valid BNMC registration or Diploma

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience working in an operating theatre, preferably in maternity or emergency surgical settings

  • Prior experience in CEmONC/EmONC or maternity hospital settings is highly desirable

  • Experience working with NGOs or in humanitarian or remote settings is an added advantage

  • Working experience in hard-to-reach areas for marginalized communities will add value

  • Willingness to work in remote settings
