Computer Literacy: Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Hospital Information Systems (HIS), and standard MS Office applications.
1. Specimen Testing & Analysis
Perform accurate and timely laboratory tests in one or more of the following sections:
Hematology: Analyzing blood cells and coagulation parameters.
Biochemistry: Testing for biochemicals and enzymes in blood and body fluids.
Microbiology: Culturing and identifying bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites; performing antibiotic susceptibility testing.
Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine: Determining blood types, screening for antibodies and cross-matching units for transfusion.
Immunology/Serology: Testing for immune system responses and antibodies.
Urinalysis: Performing physical, chemical and microscopic analysis of urine.
Operate, calibrate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment.
Recognize and troubleshoot unexpected test results and instrument malfunctions.
2. Quality Control & Assurance
Adhere strictly to the laboratory`s Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs.
Run and document control samples to ensure the accuracy and precision of test results.
Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) meticulously and participate in proficiency testing.
3. Data Management & Reporting
Accurately enter, verify and report test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or Hospital Information System (HIS).
Recognize critical (panic) values and report them immediately to the attending physician or nurse as per hospital protocol.
Maintain clear, precise and complete records of all tests performed.
4. Compliance & Safety
Comply with all safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the proper handling of biohazardous materials.
Adhere to strict infection control policies and standard precautions.
Ensure compliance with regulatory standards from agencies such as CAP, CLIA, JCI or NABH.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy.
5. Collaboration & Communication
Collaborate effectively with pathologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to discuss results and ensure appropriate test utilization.
Provide clear and professional communication when clarifying orders or obtaining additional specimen information.
