∎ Criteria of selection:
∎ Education qualification with minimum Graduation, preferably in nutrition.
∎ Experience of working as counselor/having training on counseling will be given priority.
Job Context:
∎ Shimantik, a national non-government organization in Bangladesh, started its activities back in 1979 initially to provide succor to the flood- stricken people of Zakigonj and Kanaighatupazilas of Sylhet covering 209 upazila in 29 District focusing on six mainpriorities i.e i) Health ii) Research iii) Skill Development iv) Education v) Advocacy/Awareness vi) Livelihood/ Environment. It has One Head Quarter, 2 Coordination and 55 branch offices in Bangladesh.
∎ Working Area: Dhaka South City Corporation.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ The MIYCN counselor is responsible for delivery of MIYCN services at the facility and follow up with clients to have them come back for counseling to the facility at the desired frequency. MIYCN counselors specific responsibilities include:
∎ 1. Organize individual and group counseling sessions for Pregnant women and Lactating Mothers/Caregivers of children under 24 months of age attending the facility for ANC, PNC, EPI sessions and other services.
∎ 2. Maintain register of pregnant women and lactating mothers as clients of the counseling service.
∎ 3. Maintain the counseling room and its logistics
∎ 4. Provide pregnant women following services:
∎ a. Counseling pregnant women and their family members about importance of maternal nutrition, benefits of eating diverse foods, recommended amount of foods, importance of IFA and calcium to mother & child
∎ b. Demonstrate preparation of easily available and affordable balanced diet made with locally available nutritious foods- type, quantity, frequency, diversity and measurement technique
∎ c. Ensure weight monitoring of pregnant women and monitor increase in weight
∎ d. Counsel the mother on the initiation of BF; motivate the mother to bring her husband/ mother-in-law for counseling
∎ 5. During delivery: facilitate following services through relevant staffs (Doctors/Nurse/ Paramedics)
∎ a. Ensure that the mother initiates BF within one hour after birth; ensure skin-to-skin contact
∎ b. Practice of "rooming-in", no separation of mother and baby
∎ c. Support the mother to breastfeed properly (positioning and attachment)
∎ d. Ensure no water, liquids or pre-lacteals is given to the child before the first breastfeed
∎ e. Ensure no powder milk/other milk to be given to the child before the first breastfeed or while mother is at health facility
∎ 6. Provide service related to Exclusive breastfeeding
∎ a. Schedule individual counseling sessions on EBF on demand;
∎ b. Organize fixed-day group counseling sessions;
∎ 7. Provide services related to Complementary food:
∎ a. Conduct Individual counseling on CF on demand.
∎ 8. Support special events/celebrations health facilities. Recognize women/mothers for good performance.
∎ 9. Ensure communication materials are displayed and used in the facility and during counseling.
∎ 10. Follow up the Clients via mobile telephone to remind her of the knowledge, practice, information, regular and next visit etc.
∎ 11. Prepare and submit monthly report to the Manager.
∎ 12. Guide, link and mentor the Community Worker in discharging her duties, follow up mothers, reporting etc.
∎ 13. Attend coordination and review meetings.
