Responsibilities & Context:
∎ Duration: 6-month contractUttaran is an NGO that has been operating in Bangladesh since 1985 with the mission to uphold the rights and entitlements of the poor and disadvantaged communities and to improve their socio-economic conditions. Uttaran adopts a people-centred approach, utilising a rights-based framework to alleviate poverty, diversify livelihood opportunities, and empower marginalised communities across Bangladesh.
∎ In the coastal regions of Bangladesh, the construction of 139 polders since the 1960s aimed to control the volatile environment and support agricultural development. Initially, these interventions yielded increased agricultural output, yet by the 1980s, they inadvertently disconnected the delta floodplain from the river channel network, accelerating siltation in river beds and leading to water-logging issues. Recognizing the severity of the situation, local communities drew upon historical practices and traditional knowledge, notably by cutting dykes, to mitigate these worsening impacts.
∎ Tidal River Management (TRM) is a community based river management practice rooted in indigenous knowledge. It offers nature based solutions for climate change adaptation and tidal river management. It blends traditional wisdom with modern science, reflecting a deep cultural connection to the land and rivers. TRM empowers communities, fostering resilience and sustainability amid challenges like climate change.
∎ The researcher will conduct field data collection and analyse historical data to explore the socio-ecological dynamics of the southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh. They will collaborate with stakeholders to deepen understanding of the environmental and societal impacts of Tidal River Management, contributing to Uttaran's ongoing research efforts in the area. This role is crucial in bridging social sciences with environmental management, informing sustainable practices and policies for the region.
∎ Collate secondary data (published and grey) on the technical as well as socio-political dimensions of the tidal river management (TRM) approach
∎ Get detailed, critical insights on the history and processes leading to current local knowledge and practice of TRM through detailed discussions with Uttaran and other organizations/ people’s groups working on TRM
∎ Conduct primary research in 1-2 locations in the southwest region of Bangladesh where TRM is practiced/ implemented to get a detailed insight into the technical, historical and political ecological factors of TRM.
∎ Engage with local communities, stakeholders, and experts to gather insights and perspectives on tidal river management practices and their impacts.
∎ Assist in the organisation and facilitation of workshops, seminars and meetings to disseminate research findings and promote dialogue among relevant stakeholders.
∎ Contribute to the development of research reports, publications, and other knowledge products aimed at informing policy, practice, and academia.
∎ Maintain accurate records of research activities, data collection processes, and findings for reporting purposes.
