Job Context:
∎ WorldFish, Bangladesh Office are hiring a Senior Nutrition Specialist in its USAID-funded `ECOFISH II` project in order to meet its vision: "Be the research partner of choice, delivering high impact, transformative and equitable fisheries and aquaculture solutions to reduce poverty and malnutrition in Bangladesh and South Asia". The key objective of the ECOFISH II project is to improve the resilience of the Coastal-Marine and Meghna River ecosystems and livelihoods of communities reliant on the coastal fishery. ECOFISH II will focus on the impacts of livelihood interventions and increased hilsa catch in Bangladesh waters on the household nutrition in the lower Meghna region. Besides, the project has taken up a plan for assessing the potential of producing safe and nutritious dried fish from small-scale fisheries (SSF) catches of small pelagic fish in Moheshkhali and Teknaf Upazila in Cox`s Bazar. The Senior Nutrition Specialist will work in ECOFISH II project and WorldFish, Bangladesh, in general, to promote the production of dried fish and other value-added fish products from marine small catches. S/he will be also responsible to assess the acceptability of dried small marine fish and fishery products at household`s level, especially to provide nutrient-rich diets for children and women.
∎ Eligibility, Location and Duration: This position will be based at WorldFish`s Country Office in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Interviews are expected to be held by end of February 2020 and only shortlisted candidates will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible. First 6 months is a probationary period, and extendable for a longer period upon satisfactory performance.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Assess the availability of pelagic small fish from artisanal marine catches, their volume, species composition and quality at landing.
∎ Assess the current practices of post-harvest processing and utilization of the small marine fish and its value chain, especially in USAID's Zone of Resilience, Cox's Bazar area.
∎ Promote application of better and proven low-cost practices for improving preservation of landed small fish to reduce post-harvest losses.
∎ Promote production of safe and nutritious dried fish, fish powder, and other products, through engagement of fishers' women, following community approaches.
∎ Improve the safe storage of the fisheries products to increase shelf-life and assist in packaging and branding.
∎ Develop social marketing campaign, using multiple approaches to generate local awareness for increasing demand for nutritious fish-based food products.
∎ Supervise and conduct training of nutrition field facilitators in collection of data including anthropometric measures, biochemical nutrition markers and social behavior practices and changes.
∎ Conduct focus group discussions, collect in-depth information for qualitative data, supervise and analyze diet, nutrition and health data.
∎ Develop links with other sectors - nutrition and health, food and education for the inclusion of dried fish products in programs and policies.
∎ Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation activities drafting / finalizing key nutrition sectoral programs documentation, lessons learned, preparing timely updates, reports and information.
∎ Appraise the progress of work, targets and outputs to the Team Leader/Country Director/Nutrition Research Leader, HQ. Publish the research findings in collaboration with the senior scientists and research peers in international journals.
Additional Requirements:
∎ This job is open to Bangladesh Nationals with the following skills and qualifications:
∎ At least 7 years practical working experience in human nutrition related activities in private/public/development sector.
∎ Experience in women and child feeding programs and/or fish-based products development.
∎ Experience with training and capacity building in the health and nutrition sector and community education/social marketing activities.
∎ Experience in coordinating field activities, monitor and ensure that responsibilities within the team are clear for the project goal.
∎ Possess ability of handling of large data sets and analyses using the statistical packages like Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Statistical Analysis System (SAS), etc.
∎ Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
∎ Proven records of accomplishment, working with the poor households, especially in rural communities.
Salary:
∎ This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position. The salary will be negotiable depending on qualifications. WorldFish NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.
