Overview
The Financial Accountant is the senior operational finance leader responsible for end-to-end financial control, accounting operations, treasury management, compliance, and management reporting of the organization. This role owns day-to-day treasury operations, liquidity management, banking coordination, and cash discipline, while maintaining strong accounting governance.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Financial Accountant ensures financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, cash flow stability, and internal control integrity, while progressively developing the skills, judgment, and leadership required to excel in a high-level leadership role.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Control & Accounting Leadership
Lead and oversee all functions of the Financial Control & Accounting sub-department.
Ensure accurate maintenance of:
General Ledger
Accounts Payable & Receivable
Bank & LC accounting
Cash & petty cash controls
Fixed Assets
Payroll accounting
Enforce accounting policies, chart of accounts discipline, and approval hierarchies.
Ensure monthly, quarterly, and annual closings are completed accurately and on time.
2. Treasury Operations and Cash Control (Under CFO Oversight)
All treasury activities are executed within policies, limits, and approvals defined by the CFO. Strategic capital decisions, bank negotiations, and facility approvals remain the responsibility of the CFO.
Manage daily cash position, cash forecasting, and liquidity planning.
Control bank accounts, overdrafts, loans, and credit facilities.
Oversee LC openings, amendments, settlements, and banking charges.
Coordinate closely with the CFO on:
Working capital planning
Debt management
Banking negotiations
Ensure optimal cash utilization and prevent idle or stressed liquidity.
Monitor FX exposure and support the CFO in risk mitigation strategies.
3. Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Monitoring
Prepare and manage annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
Monitor actual performance vs budget and investigate variances.
Work with department heads to improve cost discipline and financial accountability.
Provide actionable financial insights to CFO and senior management.
4. Tax, VAT, Withholding & Statutory Compliance
Ensure full compliance with:
Income tax regulations and annual returns
Withholding tax (TDS/VDS) laws and returns
Any other statutory filings
Supervise statutory payments and filing deadlines.
Coordinate with tax advisors, auditors, and authorities.
Minimize tax risk while ensuring conservative compliance.
5. Internal Control, Risk & Governance
Design, implement, and enforce strong internal financial controls.
Ensure segregation of duties across accounting, store, commercial, and procurement.
Act as a first line of defence against fraud, leakage, and misstatements.
Support internal, external, tax, and buyer audits.
Ensure closure of audit observations and control gaps.
6. Financial Reporting & Management Support
Prepare monthly management accounts, financial statements, and dashboards.
Present financial performance, risks, and cash position to CFO.
Support strategic decision-making with accurate financial data.
Maintain high-quality documentation and audit trails.
7. Team Leadership & Capability Building
Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff.
Build a performance-driven, ethical, and detail-oriented finance culture.
Identify skill gaps and recommend training or system improvements.
8. Systems, Process & Scale Readiness
Improve finance processes to support aggressive growth.
Support ERP optimization, automation, and reporting enhancements.
Ensure finance systems are scalable, controlled, and audit-ready.
Prepare the finance function for increased complexity (volume, geography, regulation).
