Responsibilities & Context:
  • Clinical & Patient Care Management

  • Oversee day-to-day clinical operations of the NICU, ensuring continuous, safe, and high-quality neonatal care.

  • Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols, aseptic techniques, and hand hygiene standards within the unit.

  • Monitor critically ill neonates, review nursing care plans, and ensure timely escalation of any deterioration to the attending Neonatologist/Paediatrician.

  • Ensure proper handling, calibration, and safe operation of NICU equipment (incubators, ventilators, phototherapy units, infusion pumps, monitors, etc.).

  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient records, vital signs, medication administration, and nursing notes.

  • Coordinate with the pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and blood bank for timely investigations and neonatal support services.

  • •        Actively participate in emergency neonatal resuscitation (NRP) and ensure the team is trained and prepared for emergencies.

  • Staff & Unit Management

  • Prepare and manage duty rosters, shift schedules, and leave planning to ensure adequate NICU staffing at all times.

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of NICU nurses and support staff; identify training needs.

  • Organize and conduct orientation, in-service training, and continuing nursing education (CNE) sessions for NICU staff.

  • Enforce hospital policies, nursing protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the unit.

  • Handle staff grievances, disciplinary matters, and performance issues in coordination with the Nursing Administration and HR Department.

  • Administrative & Operational Duties

  • •        Maintain inventory of NICU consumables, medicines, and equipment; coordinate with the Procurement Department for timely indenting and replenishment.

  • Ensure preventive maintenance and calibration schedules for NICU biomedical equipment are followed, liaising with the Biomedical/Maintenance Department.

  • Monitor and control NICU operational costs, minimizing wastage of consumables and resources without compromising patient safety.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and hospital accreditation requirements (e.g., DGHS, JCI/NABH standards where applicable).

  • Prepare periodic reports on NICU occupancy, patient outcomes, staffing, incidents, and equipment status for hospital management.

  • Participate in hospital quality improvement initiatives, infection surveillance programs, and mortality/morbidity review meetings.
