Job Context:
∎ WorldFish has led a program to introduce an improved type of carp into the fish farming market system in Bangladesh. These fish, produced via selective breeding in controlled conditions, grow faster than the carp currently produced in fish ponds in Bangladesh. This program has been underway for some years and is now approaching commercialization. The market system for farm raised carp goes from production of brood stock (the "mother fish"), through growth phases, to fish in consumer markets, and back into production and sale of brood stock. Throughout this circular market system, there are distinct commercial markets: the production and sale of fertilized fish eggs, fish spawn, fingerlings, and mature fish as both food and brood stock.
∎ The consultant will analyze the viability of these markets at the enterprise level and forecast the profitability of a firm (typical of the current industry) engaged in these businesses. The consultant will analyze the expected financial performance of a nursery which buys eggs and sells spawn, a hatchery which buys spawn and sells fingerlings, and three fish farms each of which buys fingerlings and sells mature fish into one of its three available markets. (These are hypothetical enterprises not actual firms.)
∎ This assignment furthers the inquiry into the commercial viability of this market system and focuses on these five markets:
∎ Between the nursery the hatchery
∎ Between the hatchery and the fish farms
∎ Between the fish farm and wholesalers
∎ Between the fish farm and retailers
∎ Between the fish farm and local markets directly

Job Responsibilities:
∎ Desk review of existing information about market actors and their characteristics (production volume, turnover, market reach, seasonality, etc.) already in WorldFish's possession. These relate to the carp farming system and hatcheries in particular.
∎ Understand the timing and flow of production processes at each phase of the market system visa visits to selected nurseries, hatcheries, and fish farms in southeastern Bangladesh.
∎ Understand the forecast productivity and growing cycle of the improved carp.
∎ Determine the current costs and revenues of enterprises in operation now, selling carp which are not genetically improved through meetings with enterprises and producer groups throughout the market systems.
∎ Produce income statements representative of enterprises in the current market system.
∎ Produce income statements which show expected performance of enterprises in the market system for improved carp with supplementary analysis such as break even analysis as needed. For these, assume all variables remain unchanged so that the only variable being assessed is the replacement of current egg, spawn, fingerling, and fish with the improved variety and its corresponding increases in growth rate and survival rate
∎ Deliverables:
∎ Five income statements accurately presenting the financial performance of enterprises in the market system for carp today (nursery, hatchery, and the three farm markets) along with expository notes.

Additional Requirements:
∎ Experience in hatchery and fish farming.
∎ Experience in directly applicable work.
∎ Excellent oral and written skills in English are required.
∎ VAT and TIN (Tax Identification Number) registration number is required.

∎ Experts must be available throughout the duration of an assignment. The duration can range from weeks to months. In some cases the assignment can be shortened or extended depending on business needs. Experts maybe required to travel to countries where we work.
