Responsibilities & Context:
∎ Provides professional nursing care within an shift  according to established standards and procedures.
∎ Assists in the administration of nursing programs by providing supervisory skills needed in directing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and coordinating nursing care and the delivery of patient care in an assigned unit.
∎ Financial responsibilities: Maintains and updates Inventory.
∎ Customer responsibilities: Ensures that comprehensive care is given to each patient and evaluates the services rendered.·
∎ Schedules nursing personnel to ensure adequate staffing for each shift.·
∎ Collaborates with Deputy Director of Nursing Services in determining and obtaining equipment and supplies needed in the performance of patient care.·
∎ Assists nursing personnel in identifying patient and family needs.·
∎ Participates in setting patient care standards· Counsels relatives when required at the waiting area
∎ Co-ordinates with the consultants to ensure that good nursing care is provided.
∎ Ensures that all physician’s orders are executed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
∎ Works with the Deputy Director of Nursing Services to apprise Specialist of special nursing problems and secure guidance for handling.
∎ Process responsibilities: Assists the Deputy Director of Nursing Services in the overall management of the assigned nursing areas.
∎ Keeps up to date appraisal of Unit capability and requirements. Keeps an up to date knowledge of the unit and drug changes and instructs staff of such changes.
∎ Review and inform Deputy Director of Nursing Services regarding nursing unit problems and needs, recommending changes in the policies and procedures.
∎ Assist the Deputy Director of Nursing Services in the investigation of reports of incidents, suspected infections and patient / doctor complaints and resolves problems or makes recommendation for action.
∎ Assist the Deputy Director of Nursing Services in the justification in the ordering of equipment and supplies required by the units.
∎ Ensures compliance with Quality standards ensures compliance with accreditation standards Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
∎ Ensures the proper disposal of sharps and hospital waste.
∎ People & organizational responsibility: Takes responsibility for the Senior/Staff Nurse who report to the position.
∎ Provides on job orientation to nursing personnel and keeps them informed of the philosophies, policies, and procedures to be followed in caring for patients and their families.
∎ Provides for in-service and/or continuing education for the nursing staff in the area. Evaluates the work performance of the staff. Counsel staff on personal and work problems.
∎ Plans staff work assignments and schedules. Ensure safe practice is carried out and staff follows the regulations, procedures and policies laid out by the hospital.
∎ Continuous work assessment / evaluation on staff performance and provide counseling, advise and support for staff on work related problems.
∎ Ensure even distribution of workload and take appropriate action if these are seen to be such as to constitute abuse of individual practitioner and / or as jeopardize patient care/ safe practice.
∎ To teach, supervise and support staff in carrying out their duties.
