1. Position Summary
The Senior Staff Nurse – Infection Control is responsible for implementing and monitoring evidence-based infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies throughout the hospital. The role ensures compliance with national and institutional IPC policies, supports infection surveillance programs, conducts staff training, and collaborates with departments to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and improve patient and staff safety.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Infection Surveillance & Reporting
Conduct routine and targeted surveillance of healthcare-associated infections and maintain accurate records.
Monitor infection rates, identify trends, and prepare analytical reports for the Infection Control Committee.
Assist in outbreak investigation, documentation, and implementation of corrective measures.
Track exposure incidents involving bloodborne or communicable pathogens and ensure proper follow-up.
B. Policy Implementation & Compliance
Assist in the development, revision, and enforcement of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies, guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Evaluate compliance with hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, disinfection, sterilization, biomedical waste management, isolation precautions, and PPE usage.
Conduct regular audits of clinical and non-clinical areas; report non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
C. Education & Training
Provide structured training sessions for nurses, physicians, support staff, and new employees on IPC standards and protocols.
Organize awareness campaigns on key IPC topics (e.g., hand hygiene, sharps safety, antimicrobial stewardship).
Support continuous professional development activities within the Nursing Services Department.
D. Inter-Departmental Coordination
Act as liaison between the Infection Control Department and all clinical, diagnostic, and support units.
Collaborate with bed management teams for appropriate placement of infectious and immune-compromised patients.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to address infection risks and improve patient care processes.
E. Risk Assessment & Quality Improvement
Conduct infection risk assessments in high-risk areas such as ICUs, OT, dialysis units, and emergency departments.
Contribute to hospital quality improvement and patient safety initiatives related to infection control.
Ensure timely reporting of critical issues to supervisors and the Infection Control Committee.
