Job Context:
∎ The Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) Bangladesh (WCS BD) partners with local communities and government agencies for a healthy ocean and healthy people. WCS is a not-for-profit conservation and research organization engaged in Bangladesh since 2004 with a strong focus on marine conservation. WCS BD collaborated with the Government of Bangladesh to establish the Swatch-of-No-Ground marine protected area (MPA), the Nijhum Dwip Marine Reserve/MPA, and three Wildlife Sanctuaries for freshwater dolphins in the Sundarbans.
∎ WCS BD uses science, outreach, and policy development to empower the Government of Bangladesh to (i) Establish a network of effectively managed marine protected areas in Bangladesh; (ii) Assess the status of sharks and rays and develop a national strategy for their conservation that includes improving knowledge through catch and bycatch assessments, fish landing site surveys, and market-chain analyses; (iii) Advance knowledge, institutional collaboration and technical capacity to reverse declines of the most threatened marine species, reduce overexploitation of non-threatened species, and implement international trade controls in compliance with international conventions.
∎ WCS is recruiting a contractual service provider for one year from 01 October 2020, with an initial 3-month probationary period and an option for renewing the contract as per performance and availability of funds.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ Evaluate and analyse field data including (1) Generating habitat selection models and predictive maps of species distribution to support marine spatial planning; (2) Conducting status assessments of marine wildlife according to fisher catches and landings; and (3) and Identifying priority sites to establish marine protected areas for protecting marine megafauna and meeting local fishing needs.
∎ Assist with the development of a science-based plan for an integrated network of MPAs based on the overlap between marine megafauna and conservation threats.
∎ Report results from WCS BD marine megafauna surveys, fisheries investigations, shark and ray landing site data collection, Citizen Science Fishermen Safety Network, and support the development of science-based marine conservation recommendations and MPA management plans.
∎ Develop marine spatial plans for balancing the protection threatened marine megafauna with the livelihood needs of local fishermen and sustained fisheries.
∎ Apply spatial decision-making support tools such as MARXAN.
∎ Generate written reports summarizing the marine research results.
∎ Guide marine data collection, compiling, quality control and analyses;
∎ Build partnerships with managers from government agencies, universities, and other non- governmental organizations for data sharing.
∎ Advise on the development of new data collection and analysis tools.
∎ Provide support or training to other WCS BD program staff on marine spatial analyses.

Additional Requirements:
∎ We are looking for a candidate who is self-directed and can manage variable workloads and engage with diverse collaborators.
∎ Applicants for this position should preferably have a master's or PhD degree with work experience on the analysis and modeling of large data sets.
∎ Candidates with previous experience in spatial planning, applied marine or wildlife conservation science or biostatistics will be given preference.
∎ Strong communication skills in English and Bengali (written and spoken) are essential. The position will be based in Dhaka with occasional visits to field sites required.

Salary: Negotiable
