Job Context:
∎ The Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) Bangladesh (WCS BD) partners with local communities and government agencies for a healthy ocean and healthy people. WCS is a not-for-profit conservation and research organization engaged in Bangladesh since 2004 with a strong focus on marine conservation. WCS BD collaborated with the Government of Bangladesh to establish the Swatch-of-No-Ground marine protected area (MPA), the Nijhum Dwip Marine Reserve/MPA, and three Wildlife Sanctuaries for freshwater dolphins in the Sundarbans.
∎ WCS BD uses science, outreach, and policy development to empower the Government of Bangladesh to (i) Establish a network of effectively managed marine protected areas in Bangladesh; (ii) Assess the status of sharks and rays and develop a national strategy for their conservation that includes improving knowledge through catch and bycatch assessments, fish landing site surveys, and market-chain analyses; (iii) Advance knowledge, institutional collaboration and technical capacity to reverse declines of the most threatened marine species, reduce overexploitation of non-threatened species, and implement international trade controls in compliance with international conventions.
∎ This position will be offered for one year from 01 October 2020, with an initial 3-month probationary period and an option for renewing employment as per the performance and availability of funds.

Job Responsibilities:
∎ WCS BD is recruiting a Marine Community Engagement & Policy Officer to work with our Marine Policy & Management Coordinator, Research Coordinator and Educational Outreach team to:
∎ Plan, organize and report on educational outreach activities and consultations in communities affected by current and proposed MPAs.
∎ Maintain regular communications and plan, organize and report on meetings and consultations with local communities and government offices.
∎ Prepare educational outreach and media materials in English/Bengali language to promote stewardship of marine megafauna and compliance with laws and rules in MPAs.
∎ Assist with updating, adapting or preparing training modules and manuals for WCS BD citizen scientists, at-sea surveys, marine SMART patrols, and CITES enforcement workshops.
∎ Plan, conduct, analyze data and write reports on standardized interviews with fishermen, boat owners, traders, and other marine stakeholders.
∎ Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of a monitoring system for communities affected by MPAs
∎ Assist with the organization, implementation, and reporting of surveys, investigations, consultations and trainings.
∎ Assist with monitoring cetacean mortalities by identifying, training, and coordinating with local responders.
∎ Compile and summarize secondary information on economic alternatives to reduce shark and ray fishing mortality and gear modifications needed to minimize non-target catches of sharks and rays.
∎ Maintain reference library of publications relevant to marine conservation in Bangladesh.
∎ Support Marine Program Coordinators with the preparation of budgets, obtaining supporting documents, tracking expenditures and financial transactions.
∎ Support Marine Program Coordinators with the preparation of reports and documentation of research activities and findings for donor reports, policy briefs, press releases and presentations.
∎ Develop and implement monitoring procedures to assess the impact of WCS initiatives.
Additional Requirements:
∎ We are looking for a candidate who is self-directed and can manage variable workloads and engage with diverse collaborators.
∎ Strong communication skills in English and Bengali (written and spoken) are essential.
∎ Candidates originating from southeastern Bangladesh with the ability to communicate in local dialects will be given preference.
∎ Previous experience in applied research and engagement with coastal communities is a plus.
∎ The position will be based in Dhaka but requires frequent travel, including to remote locations in south-eastern Bangladesh.
