I. Background

DW Akademie is Deutsche Welle’s center for international media development, journalism training, and knowledge transfer. Our projects strengthen the human right to freedom of expression and to independent decision making based on reliable facts and constructive dialogue. We stand for free media, free expression, and free societies worldwide.

Project

DW Akademie is implementing the project “Loud and Clear: Empowering Youth Voices 2.0”, co funded by the European Union and BMZ. The project aims to empower youth and civil society voices contribute to governance and democratic processes by engaging in policymaking from the grassroots level. The project aims to connect grassroot youth voices that are full of fresh ideas with top experts who have the power to steer sustainable systemic change but are disconnected from the youth and the voices of the grassroots. To achieve this, several initiatives are planned, including bootcamps for youth facilitators, idea labs for members, training sessions for regional journalists, roundtable discussions, and a stakeholder summit. A handbook will be published dealing with topics related to Media and Information Literacy, Digital Safety and Constructive Dialogue.

II. Scope of Work

The graphics designer will deliver the following services:

1. Page Layout: Review the handbook content (Media and Information Literacy, Digital Safety and Constructive Dialogue) to understand the target audience and brand guidelines. On the basis of this, set up the document with the correct page size, margins, bleed, and grid system. Flow and format all text. Apply heading hierarchy consistently. Format tables, lists, quotes, callout boxes, website links and source references. Position images and graphics. Ensure consistent spacing, alignment, and visual balance. Design chapter opening pages.

2. Visual design: Develop the overall visual style and layout concept. Select typography (headings, body text, captions, etc.). Define the color palette. Design recurring visual elements (headers, footers, page numbers, section dividers).
   Define a consistent visual treatment (typography, color, and styling) for hyperlinks and citations as part of the overall design system, and recommend an approach for presenting web links that works well in both the printed and PDF/digital versions of the handbook — for example, using footnotes with a full reference list, shortened/readable URL formatting, or QR codes for print, paired with live clickable links in the digital version.

3. Graphics and Visual Elements
   Create or refine icons. Design infographics and diagrams. Prepare charts and tables for publication. Edit and optimize photographs and illustrations.
   Ensure all visuals follow brand guidelines.

4. Accessibility, Readability and Quality Assurance
   Check font sizes and readability. Ensure sufficient color contrast.
   Maintain consistent styles throughout. Design for both print and digital viewing (if required). Check page numbering. Verify table of contents and cross-references. Check image resolution. Review alignment, spacing, and typography.
   Verify that hyperlink and reference formatting is applied consistently throughout the document, and confirm that all links are functional, legible, and easy to trace in both the print and digital (PDF) versions.
