Qualifications, Experience & Required Skills
Master's degree in English Language, English Literature, Linguistics, or a closely related discipline; a postgraduate teaching qualification (B.Ed., PGCE, or equivalent) is strongly preferred.
Strong command of spoken and written English at a professional and academic level.
Minimum 6 to 8 years of experience teaching English at secondary or A-Level, with at least 2 years in a department leadership, coordinator, or senior teacher role.
Proven track record of achieving outstanding student results in Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level English Language and/or English Literature examinations.
Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, academic planning, and leading a team of teachers.
Exceptional subject-matter expertise across English Language and Literature, with the ability to teach both at IGCSE and A-Level.
Strong analytical, organisational, and decision-making skills with the ability to use performance data to drive departmental improvement.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills — able to inspire staff, engage students, and communicate confidently with parents and senior leadership.
A growth mindset with a deep commitment to teacher development, reflective practice, and continuous improvement.
Familiarity with Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) curriculum frameworks, syllabuses, and assessment criteria is essential.

Position Summary
The Head of Department (HoD) — English is a senior academic leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, curriculum oversight, and overall performance of the English Department. The HoD will lead, mentor, and develop a team of English teachers; ensure the delivery of high-quality, Cambridge-aligned English Language and English Literature lessons across all year groups; and drive consistently strong student outcomes at IGCSE and A-Level. The role demands a visionary educator who combines exceptional subject expertise with the leadership capability to inspire both students and staff, champion a culture of academic excellence, and represent the English Department at the highest institutional level.
Leadership & Departmental Management
Provide strategic academic leadership and direction for the English Department, setting clear goals aligned with the school's vision and Cambridge framework.
Lead, manage, support, and appraise all English Department staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance professional culture.
Conduct regular departmental meetings, lesson observations, and teaching evaluations to maintain and raise the quality of instruction.
Identify teacher development needs and facilitate professional learning, peer coaching, and continuous improvement across the team.
Manage departmental resources, budgets, and materials efficiently, ensuring all teachers have what they need to deliver effectively.
Act as the primary academic representative of the English Department in senior leadership meetings, parent consultations, and institutional reviews.
Lead the department through Cambridge reviews, accreditation processes, and school inspections, ensuring full readiness and compliance.
Teaching, Curriculum & Student Achievement
Teach assigned English Language and/or English Literature classes at secondary or A-Level, modelling outstanding pedagogical practice for the department.
Oversee the planning, development, and continuous review of the English curriculum, schemes of work, and assessment frameworks across all year groups.
Ensure all English lessons across the department are well-planned, Cambridge-aligned, differentiated, and of consistently high quality.
Lead and coordinate student examination preparation for Cambridge IGCSE English Language, English Literature, AS and A-Level, including revision programmes and past paper practice.
Analyse departmental student performance data, identify trends, set measurable targets, and implement strategies to drive improvement.
Develop and embed robust assessment, marking, and feedback practices across the department to maximise student progress.
Promote a culture of reading, critical thinking, creative writing, and academic literacy throughout the school community.
