Duties and Responsibilities of a Palliative Care Assistant (PCA)

The Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh (PCSB) expects you to perform your duties with full responsibility and professionalism while upholding the organization’s values and principles. Accordingly, you will be required to carry out the following responsibilities:

• Provide regular home-based care and primary palliative care support to patients and their families, especially in the Korail area.

• Develop the ability to identify individuals who require palliative care through primary screening.

• Identify and assess patients’ symptoms and suffering.

• Identify the distress and challenges faced by primary caregivers, as well as family-related issues and conflicts associated with the patient’s overall condition.

• Assist in pain and symptom management under the supervision of qualified healthcare providers.

• Maintain effective communication with patients during emergencies and collaborate closely with team members, particularly healthcare providers.

• Provide psychosocial support to patients and their families.

• Offer bereavement and post-bereavement support to family members after the loss of a loved one.

• Accurately document patient care information and develop skills in preparing proper reports.

• Demonstrate effective communication skills to improve the quality of patient care.

• Maintain continuous and effective communication with patients, their families, and colleagues.

• Participate in training and skill development activities to enhance team capacity.

• Ensure compassionate care in alignment with ethical standards and the principles of palliative care.

• Organize and conduct awareness programs to promote understanding of palliative care within the community.

• Encourage community involvement in patient care and supervise the activities of local volunteers.

• Demonstrate leadership and coordination skills in managing responsibilities effectively.

• Assist in research activities conducted by the Institute of Palliative Care Bangladesh (IPC-B) and the Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh (PCSB).

• Follow the organization’s administrative structure and maintain a positive work environment.
