Job Responsibilities:
∎ Clean and arrange his workplace when he reports for duty.
∎ He is posted in specified work stations.
∎ Must follow the standard criterion of patient identification and blood collection criterion for various tests.
∎ He must go through the request paper carefully to know the nature of the tests required, arrange proper tubes for collection. If he fails to understand any test, he must go for the instruction from the Sr. Phlebotomist / SHO/Specialist./Consultant
∎ He will ensure the reception and collection of specimen in his respective section of the laboratory in accordance with the laid down standard operating procedure (SOP)
∎ Must work in his work stations until he is notified to move elsewhere.
∎ Must keep all the syringes, tubes, tourniquets ready for extraction of blood in various specific places in the Sample Collection Room, Cabins and Wards and must know their exact location and must not fumble for these things in presence of the patients.
∎ Have knowledge of skin sterilization and position of veins in the arm and dorsum and inspect the veins of the patient and tell them politely that they will get a little pain due to needle insertion. He will also try to distract the patient’s attention while taking blood. This will minimize the patients fear and anxiety during blood collection.
∎ Must know the local application of anesthetic spray in case of nervous females and children.
∎ Must use butterfly needle for extraction of blood from children and from persons having very thin veins. Must extract blood in one go with minimal discomfort to the patient
∎ Keep handy all necessary articles such as sterile cotton, 70% alcohol, Iodine, Band aid etc.
∎ Must know and use proper anticoagulants and tubes for blood collections for various purposes.
∎ Must draw blood according to the order of draw, e.g. Blood culture, Plain tube, Coagulation tube, heparin tube, violet tube, Fluoride tube in that manner.
∎ All phlebotomists will work under the guidance of the Collection Center Executive / Receptionist /Customer Relation Officer (CRO) in the Reception/Collection area and must seek permission from them if he has to leave that area for any collection in other areas or for any other reason.
∎ Phlebotomists are solely responsible for collection of blood and any other specimens and they must put CBC sample on the rotator and shake slowly the blood for coagulation study and shake the whole blood tube once or twice and later keep standing for coagulation to take place. He must keep the these samples in the specific rack for taking to the Lab upstairs by the Specimen Carrier
∎ For urine sample collection must advice the patient for mid-stream clean catch sample
∎ Special care must be taken to receive samples for Histopathology / Cytology and specimens for culture sensitivity and staining.
∎ He must know the correct technique to take Throat/ Nasal/Eye/ Ear/ Wound swab etc. Any culture specimen received by the phlebotomist must be entered in the Register, which is kept in the Reception area.
∎ Phlebotomists must write his name, the time of collection and date in each request paper/Bill form to trace the person who has taken the sample in case of any enquiry.
