Educational Requirements:
∎ Preferably Nurse, midwife or auxiliary midwife qualification.
Job Context:
∎ The IYCF Counselor works under direct guidance of IYCF nurse and indirectly under nutrition site supervisor. He/she is directly responsible for the day-to-day management of IYCF practices at the nutrition facility. The major focus should be to ensure that key IYCF messages are conveyed appropriately within beneficiary communities, and that caregivers receive appropriate support.

∎ Report To: CMAMI/IYCF Nurse
∎ Expected Start Date: 1st April 2022
∎ Contract length: Up to 31st December, 2022 (With possibility of Extension subject to funding, program needs and performance of incumbent)
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Under the guidance of the CMAMI/IYCF, the IYCF Counselor will be responsible for-
∎ Counseling and support appropriate nutrition during adolescence and pregnancy from the nutrition site and in the community through the CNVs and lead mothers.
∎ Counseling and support appropriate nutrition during lactation and feeding of the child/children from the nutrition site and in the community through the CNVs and lead mothers.
∎ Lead the conducting of nutrition education messages from the triage and keep record,
∎ Ensures that records for IYCF counseling are tracked in IYCF registers and are reported on monthly basis based on record data.
∎ Ensure that IYCF guidelines, counseling cards are in use at the facility and in the community.
∎ Conduct individual and group counselling are done from the site during admission and follow up days.
∎ Follow up that individual and group counseling are done from the community by the CNVs and lead mothers and reported.
∎ Lead the formation of MtMSGs (Mother to Mother Support Group), guide group seasons activities.
∎ Lead the provision of IYCF messaging and malnutrition screening during nutrition outreaches.
∎ Organize, mobilize, conduct and report cooking demonstration in the nutrition facility community at least on a quarterly basis.
∎ Lead the establishment and maintaining of kitchen gardening at the nutrition sites and promotion of lead mothers, CNVs and members of MtMSGs to establish the home garden at their home, to provide food source for complementary feeding for their children in the family.
∎ Establishing and usage of baby-friendly space in the facility and community initiative.
∎ Advocacy and communication
∎ Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between IYCF-E, CMAM, health, education and CP programming.
∎ Undertake advocacy targeting other humanitarian actors and local authorities on assessment and following national/international standards on supporting infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
∎ Health & Safety
∎ Comply with established health and safety policies with regard to handling of instruments, storage of drugs and disposal of sharps and other potentially dangerous equipment and substances.
Additional Requirements:

∎ Knowledge of optimal IYCF practices, able to support breastfeeding mothers, and a willingness to learn.
∎ Experience of breastfeeding counselling mandatory.
∎ Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathize with all beneficiaries and their caretakers.
∎ Capacity to keep accurate records of activities and report in a timely manner.
∎ Fluency in the local working language.
