Role Purpose
You would be responsible for the institution’s entire reporting, analytics, and data governance function. You will design and maintain the SQL Server data layer, build and manage all Power BI and SSRS reporting, carry out advanced statistical analysis, and work directly with the Senior Leadership Team to deliver insights that drive strategic and operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Design and maintain the SQL Server Reporting: stored procedures, views, and data models (star/snowflake schema).
Own the full Power BI reporting lifecycle: requirements gathering, data modelling, DAX measures, Power Query transformations, Row-Level Security, and Power BI Service administration.
Build and maintain organisation-wide dashboards including OFS compliance reporting, attendance monitoring, admissions pipeline tracking, and retention analytics.
Produce SSRS paginated reports for registry extracts, attendance detail, and scheduled distributions.
Carry out statistical analysis and predictive modelling using Python/R for work that goes beyond the standard BI stack.
Automate recurring workflows and manual processes using Power Automate, Power Pages, and scheduled scripts.
Prepare, validate, and submit OFS regulatory returns (HESES, Student, AP Student).
Present complex findings to non-technical senior stakeholders and produce board-level reporting packs.
Own data governance, GDPR compliance, and information security across all reporting outputs.
Maintain comprehensive technical documentation for all data systems, pipelines, and reports.
Essential Skills and Experience
Strong SQL Server skills: T-SQL (CTEs, window functions, MERGE, pivots), stored procedures, SSIS, indexing, and query optimisation.
Advanced Power BI: semantic modelling, DAX (time intelligence, iterators, semi-additive measures), Power Query (M), RLS, deployment pipelines, SSRS/Report Builder.
Proficiency in Python (pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib) and/or R (tidyverse, ggplot2, caret) for statistical and predictive work.
Experience with ETL/ELT pipeline design and data warehousing concepts.
Understanding of UK higher education data: student registry, admissions, attendance, retention, and OFS/HESA regulatory reporting.
Practical knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and information security best practices.
Excellent stakeholder communication: able to translate technical outputs into clear, actionable insights for senior leaders.
Self-directed and comfortable operating independently as the sole data professional.
Desirable
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
Experience building attendance monitoring or early-warning intervention dashboards in a higher education setting.
Familiarity with HESA data collections and Student data futures.
Exposure to cloud-hosted SQL or analytics environments .
Experience producing board-level reporting packs and presenting to senior leadership.
