Job Responsibilities:
∎ Greet and reassure patients, explain the blood collection procedure, and answer any questions or concerns to ensure their comfort and cooperation.
∎ Confirm patient identity and review requisition forms to ensure the correct tests are ordered and that all necessary information is provided.
∎ Choose the appropriate collection equipment, such as needles, tubes, and syringes, based on the specific blood collection requirements and the patient's condition.
∎ Perform venipuncture, which involves locating suitable veins, cleansing the area, and inserting a needle to draw blood. Phlebotomists may also be responsible for performing fingersticks or heelsticks on infants and young children.
∎ Accurately label blood samples with patient information, date, time, and other necessary details. Ensure proper handling and storage of collected specimens to maintain their integrity.
∎ Follow strict aseptic techniques and safety protocols to prevent the transmission of infections, including wearing gloves and disposing of sharps and biohazard waste appropriately.
∎ Provide emotional support to patients who may be anxious or uncomfortable during the blood collection process, ensuring their well-being.
∎ Monitor and maintain the quality and accuracy of collected blood samples to prevent hemolysis or contamination.
∎ Document all procedures and patient information accurately, maintaining organized and complete records for each blood draw.
∎ Ensure the proper and timely transport of collected specimens to the laboratory, following established protocols and maintaining the integrity of the samples during transit.
∎ Perform routine maintenance and quality control checks on phlebotomy equipment, such as needles, vacutainer tubes, and centrifuges, to ensure their proper functioning.
∎ Adhere to all relevant regulations, standards, and protocols related to phlebotomy, including patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance) and safety guidelines.
