∎ Age 32 to 50 years
Responsibilities & Context:
∎ Navigation and Passage Planning: Creating and executing navigation plans, maintaining accurate charts and publications, and managing watch-keeping schedules.
∎ Cargo Operations: Overseeing the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring proper stowage and securing procedures, and managing cargo documentation.
∎ Safety Management: Conducting regular safety drills, inspections, and maintenance checks, ensuring crew safety training, and responding to emergencies.
∎ Deck Crew Supervision: Managing and assigning tasks to the deck crew, including able seamen and ordinary seamen.
∎ Ship Maintenance: Monitoring the ship's hull condition, supervising repairs and maintenance activities, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
∎ Stability and Load Line Management: Maintaining the ship's stability by managing ballast operations and ensuring compliance with load line regulations.
∎ Port State Control Inspections: Preparing the vessel for and coordinating with port state control inspections
∎ Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate logbooks, navigational records, and other required documentation.
∎ Environmental Compliance: Adhering to environmental protection regulations and managing waste disposal procedures
∎ Important points to remember:
∎ Second in Command: The Chief Officer is typically considered the second-in-command to the Captain on a ship.
∎ Deck Department Head: They are responsible for leading the deck department, overseeing all deck crew operations.
∎ License Required: To become a Chief Officer, a maritime license is required, depending on the vessel's size and operating area
