∎ About the Project - Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University (JU), established in 1971 as a public university, will implement a project, as a partner, titled, `Protecting Tigers, People and their vital habitats in the Sundarban delta in India and Bangladesh - Phase II`, with financial support from IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, based at Gland, Switzerland. The project will cover both Bangladesh and Indian Sundarbans and be implemented jointly where Jahangirnagar University will lead a research component, named hereafter, `Protecting tigers in the Sundarbans` in the Bangladesh Sundarbans. On behalf of the university, the Principal Investigator and Project Director, Dr M. A. Aziz, Professor of Zoology, will lead and implement the project with active support from the Bangladesh Forest Department and IUCN Bangladesh.
∎ The Project Director has been researching tigers, its preys and their habitats in the Sundarbans with commendable successes over decades. The research activities proposed under JU component aims to improve the understanding about tigers, prey population dynamics and the carrying capacity of tigers in the Sundarbans. The activities as stated will directly address the objectives set out in the Bangladesh Tiger Action Plan, and its threat objectives. Specifically, the outcome of this component will provide baseline for tiger`s prey species and lay the foundation of tiger`s prey density and distribution monitoring in future.
Job Responsibilities:
∎ Major Responsibilities
∎ The Project will recruit a Wildlife Biologist for 'Protecting tigers in the Sundarbans' funded by the IUCN. The primary purpose of the position is to serve as a member of a research team to facilitate research activities and extend support as per the need of the project and beyond. For this, the Project seeking a skilled, dynamic person to facilitate various research activities including, but not limited to, tiger and prey monitoring, developing wildlife manual for communities, collecting human-tiger conflict data, etc. The position also requires working with a team that could include local community members, forest department staff, and university students. This position also requires to assist with safety training and team-building workshops, result-sharing workshops and visit field sites for survey and data collection. This may include travel to remote areas of the Sundarbans that would require high physical activities with strong mentality and strength. Fieldwork frequently requires longer than 8-hour days. This position will be based at Dhaka, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat, as per the requirement of the project. The key responsibilities are outlined below:
∎ Key Services:
∎ Provide support to the Project Director and research team that would include staff management, budgeting, inventory of equipment, research logistics management, procurement of equipment and services as per the direction of the Project Director.
∎ Supervise the management of field collected data for tiger and prey monitoring and other research activities.
∎ Develop first-aid and field-safety training module and organize training for the project employee, forest department staffs, and other selected researchers and students from universities.
∎ Support the Project Director in communication with other project partners, donors, local communities and forest departments.
∎ Support the Project Director for drafting Wildlife Manual, project reports and other technical documents as required during project implementation.
∎ Organize workshops and meetings to share draft manual research results and outcome with forest departments, communities and other project partners.
∎ Organize meetings and establish communication system with Forest Department, and other stakeholders for exchange of information.
∎ Assist with the selection, management and mentoring of other staff/assistants of the team.
∎ Organize various regular meetings within research team and with other stakeholders.
∎ Assist to prepare activity timeline, work plan and monthly/six-monthly progress reports.
∎ Actively contribute in strategic planning, data entry, analysis and technical report writing.
∎ Maintain project budget monitor to review projections and burn rate, and report to the Project Director and donors.
∎ Initiate, plan, conduct and or participate in internal and external meetings as per the requirement.
∎ Coordinate and consolidate project inputs/updates from team members as required by the Project Director for purposes such as revising and refining project strategy and work plan, internal and external reporting (periodically according to specified reporting schedule and/or as required), project monitoring and evaluation, developing new proposals and preparing project documents or presentations.
∎ Represent Project Director at meetings, functions, events; give presentations when required.
∎ Assist and/or conduct project activities and tasks, as and when assigned.
Additional Requirements:
∎ 8 years of experience with various ecological research and monitoring techniques, research design, data analysis and publishing results.
∎ Research experience at least 5 years in the Sundarbans involving tigers and other wildlife would be preferable, where academic/other qualifications can be relaxed.
∎ Experience of managing research projects in the field of natural resource management would be an advantage.
∎ Demonstrated success in achieving results under challenging implementation circumstances.
∎ Ability to quickly adjust to changing priorities and deadlines.
∎ Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
∎ Willingness to travel remote places.
∎ In addition, for this position the Project is looking for the following: fluent at written and spoken English, high proficiency in Microsoft office, GIS, etc., and someone who is comfortable, and quick to become familiar, with new software and technologies.
