Responsibilities & Context:

Job Responsibilities – Structural Engineer

1. Structural Design & Engineering

  • Design and analyze structural systems for residential apartment buildings, high-rise developments, villas, duplexes, commercial facilities, and associated structures.

  • Develop safe, economical, durable, and constructible structural solutions in accordance with approved architectural concepts and project requirements.

  • Perform structural analysis and design for reinforced concrete, steel, and other applicable structural systems.

  • Design and review structural elements including foundations, piles, pile caps, rafts, footings, columns, beams, slabs, shear walls, retaining walls, staircases, lift cores, ramps, parapets, and other structural components.

  • Conduct structural calculations for dead loads, live loads, wind loads, seismic loads, earth pressure, water pressure, and other applicable design conditions.

  • Ensure structural systems provide adequate strength, stability, serviceability, durability, and safety throughout the intended design life.

  • Optimize structural systems to achieve efficient material utilization and commercially viable construction costs.

2. Residential Building Structural Planning

  • Develop structural framing systems suitable for residential apartment layouts and high-rise residential developments.

  • Coordinate structural grids, column positions, beam depths, slab systems, shear walls, lift cores, staircases, and service shafts with architectural planning.

  • Review apartment layouts to minimize structural interference with usable floor areas, balconies, parking, utility spaces, and common facilities.

  • Provide structural solutions that support efficient apartment planning and maximize functional space without compromising safety.

  • Ensure structural design accommodates architectural features, façade systems, balconies, canopies, roof structures, water tanks, and other residential building requirements.

3. Foundation Design & Substructure

  • Review soil investigation and geotechnical reports and provide structural input for foundation selection.

  • Design and review shallow foundations, pile foundations, pile caps, raft foundations, retaining structures, and other substructure systems as applicable.

  • Coordinate foundation design with geotechnical consultants and project teams.

  • Review soil conditions and construction-stage findings and recommend appropriate structural responses where required.

  • Monitor foundation-related construction activities to ensure compliance with approved structural designs.

  • Review excavation, piling, pile integrity testing, pile load testing, pile caps, foundation reinforcement, and related structural works.

4. Structural Drawings & Documentation

  • Prepare, review, and approve structural drawings, design calculations, structural details, schedules, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Ensure structural drawings accurately reflect approved architectural and engineering requirements.

  • Review reinforcement detailing, structural sections, connection details, construction joints, expansion joints, and other critical structural details.

  • Ensure drawings are clear, coordinated, constructible, and suitable for site execution.

  • Maintain proper document control and ensure only approved and updated drawings are issued for construction.

  • Review revisions and ensure structural changes are properly incorporated into relevant drawings and documents.

5. Structural Analysis & Software

  • Perform structural analysis using appropriate engineering principles, methodologies, and industry-standard software.

  • Develop structural models and verify design assumptions, load combinations, boundary conditions, and design parameters.

  • Review structural analysis reports and ensure design outputs are technically sound.

  • Use appropriate software and digital tools for structural modeling, analysis, design, drafting, and documentation.

  • Coordinate structural models with architectural and MEP models where BIM or integrated digital coordination is implemented.

6. Architectural & Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Coordinate structural design closely with architects, MEP engineers, civil engineers, landscape designers, interior designers, and other consultants.

  • Review architectural drawings and identify potential structural conflicts at an early stage.

  • Coordinate column locations, beam layouts, slab levels, lift shafts, staircases, service openings, façade systems, and other interfaces.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary design coordination meetings and provide timely technical solutions.

  • Resolve structural conflicts without adversely affecting architectural functionality or project objectives.

7. MEP Coordination

  • Coordinate structural provisions required for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, drainage, and other MEP services.

  • Review MEP service openings, sleeves, embedded items, shafts, equipment foundations, and penetrations through structural elements.

  • Ensure MEP coordination does not compromise the structural integrity of beams, slabs, columns, shear walls, or other critical elements.

  • Provide appropriate structural details for equipment bases, generator foundations, water tanks, pump rooms, and other MEP-related structures.

8. Construction Supervision

  • Monitor structural construction activities at residential project sites to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and quality standards.

  • Conduct regular site inspections of foundation, piling, reinforcement, formwork, concrete, masonry support structures, and other structural works.

  • Verify reinforcement placement, bar diameter, spacing, lap length, anchorage, cover, development length, and other critical requirements.

  • Inspect formwork, shuttering, scaffolding, construction joints, embedded items, and other pre-concreting requirements.

  • Monitor concrete pouring activities and ensure proper preparation, placement, vibration, curing, and quality-control procedures.

  • Provide technical guidance to site engineers and contractors regarding structural execution.

9. Quality Control

  • Establish and maintain appropriate structural quality-control procedures for residential construction projects.

  • Ensure structural materials and workmanship comply with approved specifications and applicable standards.

  • Review concrete mix designs, reinforcement materials, structural steel, cement, aggregates, admixtures, and other relevant materials.

  • Monitor concrete cube tests, reinforcement tests, pile tests, soil tests, and other applicable quality-control activities.

  • Review laboratory test results and recommend corrective actions where required.

  • Identify structural defects, non-conformities, and workmanship issues and ensure timely rectification.

10. Site Inspection & Technical Problem Solving

  • Investigate structural issues identified during construction and recommend appropriate technical solutions.

  • Review site conditions that differ from approved drawings and determine suitable engineering responses.

  • Provide technical instructions for resolving structural discrepancies, construction difficulties, and design conflicts.

  • Evaluate proposed changes and alternatives submitted by contractors or site teams.

  • Escalate critical structural risks to senior management and consultants without delay.

11. Shop Drawing & Technical Submittal Review

  • Review structural shop drawings, reinforcement drawings, fabrication drawings, bar bending schedules, and other contractor submissions.

  • Verify shop drawings against approved structural design and architectural requirements.

  • Review material technical submittals and ensure compliance with project specifications.

  • Review method statements for major structural construction activities.

  • Provide clear comments and approvals within agreed project timelines.

12. Contractor & Consultant Coordination

  • Coordinate with structural consultants, architects, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, project managers, and site engineers.

  • Review contractor performance related to structural works and identify technical or quality concerns.

  • Participate in technical meetings, coordination meetings, site meetings, and progress review meetings.

  • Provide professional recommendations to management regarding structural construction matters.

  • Ensure technical decisions are properly documented and communicated to relevant project stakeholders.

13. BOQ, Quantity & Cost Management

  • Assist in preparing and reviewing structural BOQs, quantity take-offs, material requirements, and cost estimates.

  • Verify quantities of reinforcement steel, concrete, formwork, structural steel, piling, foundations, and other structural works.

  • Review contractor measurement sheets and structural work-related payment claims.

  • Evaluate variations and additional structural works from a technical and quantity perspective.

  • Support commercial and procurement teams with technical information related to structural materials and works.

14. Value Engineering

  • Identify opportunities to optimize structural design and reduce unnecessary construction costs without compromising safety or quality.

  • Evaluate alternative structural systems, materials, spans, slab systems, foundation solutions, and construction methods.

  • Coordinate with architects, consultants, commercial teams, and contractors to assess value-engineering proposals.

  • Consider lifecycle cost, durability, maintenance, construction speed, material availability, and long-term performance when evaluating alternatives.

15. Residential Project Construction Management Support

  • Provide structural engineering support throughout the complete project lifecycle, from feasibility and design development to construction and handover.

  • Assist project management teams in establishing structural work priorities and construction sequences.

  • Monitor structural progress against approved project schedules.

  • Identify potential delays and recommend appropriate corrective actions.

  • Provide timely technical decisions to minimize disruption to construction activities.

16. Safety & Structural Integrity

  • Ensure structural designs and construction activities comply with applicable safety requirements and relevant building codes.

  • Pay particular attention to structural stability during excavation, piling, formwork, concrete construction, and temporary works.

  • Review temporary structural arrangements where required for safe construction.

  • Immediately report critical structural safety concerns and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

  • Promote a strong safety culture among site teams and contractors.
