Job Responsibilities:
∎ The primary role of a labor and delivery nurse is to monitor and provide care for the mother and her baby.
∎ Serving as an expert in the birthing process, a labor and delivery nurse provides intensive support for the patient, and is ready to intervene, at a moment’s notice.
∎ During a routine delivery, a labor and delivery nurse assists the physician by anticipating the need for supplies and equipment, encouraging the patient, administering medicine, and attending to the baby after birth.
∎ Since each birth is unique, a labor and delivery nurse must be ready for anything.
∎ Occasionally, a precipitous or sudden labor acceleration may require a labor and delivery nurse to deliver the baby, without a physician present.
∎ In the event of an emergency, a labor and delivery nurse must be fast-acting. Prepping a patient for a Cesarean Section, retrieving special equipment, and calling for assistance are just a few of the tasks that may be required.
∎ In the operating room, a labor and delivery nurse may serve as a scrub nurse or a circulating nurse, acting as the primary patient advocate for the mom.
∎ After the baby has arrived, a labor and delivery nurse provides aftercare for both mom and baby.
