Experience:
The OT Nurse is a specialized registered nurse responsible for patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. They work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the operation theatre runs safely, efficiently, and maintains the highest standards of sterile technique and patient safety.
Patient Assessment: Review patient medical history, verify surgical consent, check lab results, and conduct pre-op physical assessments.
Patient Preparation: Prepare the patient psychologically and physically (e.g., site marking, intravenous lines, pre-medication administration) and ensure comfort.
Room Readiness: Inspect, test, and prepare surgical equipment, specialized instruments, lights, suction machines, and anaesthesia apparatus.
Sterility Check: Ensure all surgical instruments, linen packs, and supplies are properly sterilized and available.
As a Scrub Nurse:
Maintain sterile fields throughout the procedure.
Hand instruments, sutures, and supplies correctly and efficiently to the surgeon and assistants.
Perform accurate needle, sponge, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse before and after the procedure.
As a Circulating Nurse:
Monitor the environment of the operating room and manage patient safety.
Document all nursing care, medications administered, and intra-operative events accurately.
Manage specimen collection, labeling, and dispatch to the laboratory.
Assist the anaesthesia team during induction and emergence.
Patient Transfer: Safely transfer the patient from the operating table to the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) or Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Handover Reporting: Provide a comprehensive verbal and written handover to the recovery room nurse, detailing the surgical procedure, intra-operative complications, and fluid/blood loss.
OT Cleanup & Restocking: Supervise or assist with the safe disposal of biomedical waste, sharps, and hazardous materials. Restock the theatre for the next procedure.
Education: Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) from a recognized institution.
Licensure: Valid nursing registration/license from the respective national/state nursing council.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience working in an acute care setting, with at least 1 year specifically inside an Operation Theatre environment.
Clinical Proficiency: Deep understanding of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and emergency response protocols.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to coordinate effectively with a multidisciplinary surgical team.
Attention to Detail: High level of vigilance and accuracy during instrument counts and patient monitoring.
Physical & Mental Stamina: Ability to stand for long hours, work flexible shifts (including on-call duties), and remain calm under high-stress, emergency conditions.
