Responsibilities & Context:
∎ Safe navigation: The OOW is responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, including determining its position and following the planned route.
∎ Emergency preparedness: The OOW organizes and participates in emergency drills and procedures to ensure the bridge team is prepared to respond quickly and efficiently.
∎ Crew management: The OOW manages the deck crew for daily tasks, except for maintenance.
∎ Cargo handling: In ports, the OOW manages cargo loading and unloading, and ensures safe berthing and unberthing.
∎ Passage plan: The OOW manages the passage plan, which details the voyage.
∎ Echo sounder: The OOW checks the echo sounder to ensure accurate readings of the water's depth.
∎ Compass comparison: The OOW compares compasses to determine if there are any errors that could impact the course.
∎ Ship draft: The OOW ensures the ship's draft is displayed on the bridge, and updates it if there are any changes.
∎ Helmsman and lookout: The OOW ensures the helmsman and lookout are alert and constantly on their feet.
∎ General ship checks: The OOW performs general checks on the ship
